If you’re considering taking a more active role in improving your workplace, then joining a local committee is a great way immerse yourself. Local 1681 offers a variety of roles both within and outside of the workplace for members looking to make an impact. Check out the descriptions below, then follow the link to nominate yourself for a new role in your labour union:

Bylaw (Legislative) Committee – Bylaws are the individual rules and regulations of local and district lodges. Our committee members will work to propose bylaws and changes to the current rules, within the constraints of the IAM Constitution. They will help with understanding and interpretation of local bylaws, propose changes, and consult with the Bylaw Department of the IAM during development and amendment of local bylaws. This committee is mandated to have three (3) members appointed by the Local President.

Health and Safety Committee – Local 1681 members of the Health and Safety Committee primary focus is to assist the leadership and members with safety and health issues; the tracking and seeking improvement in regulations and legislation that impact the workplace is a constant function of the department. Safety Committee members shall be appointed by the President in consultation with the Executive Board. The Safety Committee shall elect a Chairman as per the Canada Labour Code.

Women’s Committee – A Women’s Committee consisting of three (3) members will be established to promote more active involvement by women in the union and to make recommendations on appropriate educational programs. The primary goals of the Women’s Committee include: Achieving equality, economic security and power sharing in the workplace, educating our Sisters to affect change to the challenges women face in the workplace, enhancing the organizing efforts of the IAMAW, involving our Sisters in politics and the legislative arena, and networking and collaborating with like-minded groups.

Human Rights Committee – The purpose of the Human Rights Committee is to educate, equip, and empower IAM activists with the tools needed to promote fairness, equality, and inclusion across our union and workplaces. The goals of this committee include: Strengthening local and district-level engagement in advancing human rights, defending and improving worker rights through the legislative process, supporting organizing efforts that prioritize traditionally underrepresented workers, developing strategies to address and intervene in workplace harassment, and continued education about IAM resources available to support Human Rights Committee work. Human Rights Committees play a vital role in building inclusive participation in union leadership and promoting diversity, mutual respect, and equality throughout the IAM. The Local 1681 Human Rights Committee will consist of two (2) members, one from each station, appointed by the Local President.

Social Committee – The Local 1681 Social committee shall consist of three (3) members, appointed by the Executive board, with the goal of arranging, promoting, and convening all social functions.

Negotiations Committee – Members from a bargaining unit will be elected no less than 8 months prior to the expiry of the relative Collective Bargain Agreement to represent the interests of the bargaining unit. Committee members will be expected to attend all committee meetings and negotiation training offered by the IAM, attend pre-negotiations and set an agenda in consultation with the company. They are expected to bargain in good faith and report all progress to the District and Local levels as determined by committee mandates.

Elected Committee Positions (3 year terms, current term expires Dec 31, 2028)

Finance Committee – The role of the Finance committee is to scrutinize all bills before their presentation to the Executive Board and the membership for approval, to prepare and present a budget at the regular meeting in March and April, and to generally advise the membership regarding the financial condition and transactions of the Lodge. The Finance Committee shall consist of three (3) Trustees and the Secretary-Treasurer.

Audit Committee – Every six months lodges are required, per Article C Section 7 of the IAM Constitution, to perform audits on the lodge records. The financial audit is an internal control that is vital to the proper operation of the lodge. An Auditing Committee of three (3) members shall be elected at the same time Local Lodge Officers elections are held and for the same term.
